Facts About Substrates And Coatings

The most popular substrates in the metal roofing and siding industry are GALVALUME and galvanized steel. The base metal in both substrates is coated in a hot-dip process. Galvanized substrate utilizes zinc as a protective material, while GALVALUME utilizes an alloy of zinc and aluminum. All galvanized substrates are not created equal. On a galvanized substrate, the greater the amount of zinc, the greater the corrosion protection. McElroy's Max-Rib 90 utilizes a G-90 galvanized substrate, containing 50% more protective zinc than a G-60 substrate.

Facts About Coatings
The coating system used for metal panels is just as important as the substrate. The most popular coatings are polyester, siliconized polyester and Kynar 500/Hylar 5000. Of the three, Kynar 500/Hylar 5000 systems, which are used on Max-Rib Ultra, provide the greatest protection against panel chalk and fade.

When the level of chalk and fade is not a major concern, siliconized polyester systems, which are used on Max-Rib 90, present the best alternative. McElroy Metal believes that straight polyester coatings should only be used for shades of white. Nature's elements tend to rapidly break down the pigmentation of dark straight polyester coatings, resulting in greater chalk and fade. Be sure to ask your builder or supplier which coating he is specifying for your building project.

Englert® Metal Shingles combine the durability and strength of galvanized steel with the beauty of natural materials, resulting in a roof that looks great and will last a lifetime. These shingles resist dirt and environmental aging and come with a lifetime warranty. When you roof with metal shingles, you save the cost of re-roofing, adding a significant value to your home! You also save on energy costs because these shingles reflect the sun's heat instead of absorbing it. Added to all of these benefits is that Englert® shingles weigh one-third of what asphalt shingles weigh and are as much as 50% recycled material.
